Lisa A. Miller, CNM, JD

Formerly an Assistant Professor of OB/GYN at Northwestern University Medical School, Lisa is a renowned expert in fetal monitoring and perinatal safety. Lisa teaches multi-disciplinary fetal monitoring programs and provides risk management/ patient safety consultation to individuals, hospitals and other organizations. She is an active member of AWHONN and ACNM as well as being a member of the Illinois State Bar.

Lisa has been a requested presenter at the National AWHONN Conventions.  Her sessions on Fetal Monitoring, Communication, Safety, and Liability are to standing room only audiences.  

Lisa joined Drs. Roger Freeman, Thomas Garite, and Michael Nageotte as the fourth author (and first nursing author) of the classic textbook Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring, 4th ed., published May 2012 by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins. She is on the editorial board of the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing, where she currently authors two columns, Legal Issues and Risk Management and Parting Thoughts.  Lisa is co-author of Mosby’s latest Pocket Guide, Fetal Monitoring:  A Multi-disciplinary Approach, and the developer and creator of the ReadRight EFM ruler and ReadRight EFM Differentials. Along with co-author Dr. David Miller, Lisa has provided “train the-trainer” sessions for a joint initiative between ACOG District II and the Healthcare Association of New York State, with physician, midwifery and nursing participants from over 90 hospitals.  Her international presentations include addressing error and safety in perinatal care for the program Controversies in OB-GYN (Paris,2008), The World Congress of Perinatal Medicine (Berlin, 2009) and the Global Congress of Maternal and Infant Health (Barcelona, 2010).

Lisa now focuses on improving obstetric care here in the United States,where her extensive experience as a legal consultant brings a unique viewpoint to patient safety, risk reduction, and risk mitigation.

Lisa currently teaches our Electronic Fetal Monitoring (with NCC Certification Exam option) and Advanced Fetal Monitoring courses.  Lisa also presents our one-day Obstetrics and liability course, OB on Trial.
